About me

Hello, my name is Antal Orcsik, Tony.
I'm a Senior Web Application Developer.

I work as Development Team Leader at IBM.
I live in the beautiful city of Budapest, Hungary.

In my entire professional life I was working with the Internet. I created my first websites around 2000, and since then I kept learning all the new and interesting ways to interact with one of mankinds greatest achievements, the network that transforms our lifes every day.

My profession was a hobby first and I still spend much of my free time on projects like my movie premiere site Mozipremierek, my blog CoderDays and this page.

March 2016 - Present

In the mid-90s, when I started to show interest about computers, the name IBM was among the first I learned. It was everywhere, it was important, it was a legend. Today I'm part of this legend.

  • IBM Cloudant
  • PaaS
  • DevOps
  • Git
  • NoSQL
  • JavaScript

Senior Application Developer

March 2016 - Present

My job is to create and manage HR websites and business processes, used by 400 thousand IBMers around the world.

May 2013 - February 2016

I joined Prezi to leave my confort zone, my senior PHP developer role for a startup, where I could learn something every day. It was one of the decisions I'm most proud of in my professional life.

  • Amazon EC2
  • Amazon DynamoDB
  • Amazon S3
  • IaaS
  • DevOps
  • Jenkins
  • Git
  • NoSQL

Payment Engineer

March 2015 - February 2016

I transferred internally to the Payments team, where we worked on integrating third party payment processors to our actual payment flow, managed subscriptions and renewals and sales A/B testing in a Python based backend and backbone frontend architecture.

Infrastructure Engineer

May 2013 - March 2015

As an infrastructure engineer I was developing backend solutions using Python and Scala and managing Amazon IaaS Cloud architecture. Our goal was to transition Prezi backend from monolithic hosted application to a microservice architecture in the cloud. The largest project I worked on here was separating the presentation backend/database and moving it to Amazon EC2/RDS instances. I was also part of the authentication service separation and several smaller projects.

July 2005 - April 2013

This was my first professional job. It started me on my career and became a cozy environment where I could grow in comfort.

  • Linux
  • SVN
  • PHP
  • MySQL
  • JavaScript
  • HTML
  • CSS

Senior Web Developer

January 2008 - April 2013

In 2008 I was assigned to the köpönyeg project, which became one of the largest weather portals in Hungary since then. Developing this site required such skills as creating web crawlers and various visualizations, and continously maintaining the code to handle the increasing traffic. The extensive use of caching and optimized database usage took key roles in the achievement of reaching 400k+ unique visitors in early 2012.

Web Developer

January 2007 - January 2008

For one year I was the lead developer of Utcakereső.hu a PHP powered city map web application.

Junior Web Developer

July 2005 - January 2007

I was hired as an intern and stayed as a full time sitebuilder working on the redesign of ingatlan.com real estate portal using client side technologies, JavaScript, CSS and HTML. Later I was involved in some backend development with PHP.

Eötvös Lóránd University

September 2013 - July 2016

Three years after I quit BME I decided to resume my academic studies. I started over in a more science oriented institute, where the science of programming was much more in focus.

Computer Science

Bachelor of Science

ELTE was a great fit for me, I progressed well and completed my final exams with excellent grades in July 2016.

My final project was an algorithmic sequence modeler, that could visualize simple programming patterns in a grpahical way, which is used as a educational tool. The modeler can compile and run the programs while showing the actually evaluated section.

Budapest University of Technology and Economics

September 2003 - February 2010

I began my academic studies at BME, but I didn't finish them here. However, this was the place where I started discovering my skills in programming, and it had a huge influence on my professional career.

Computer Engineering

Bachelor of Science (Unfinished)

During this time I learned the basics of programming, and wrote my first real applications in C and Java. I acquired some PHP skills for a community project, which I applied for summer work. I quit this institute, when real world project proved to be more interesting and rewarding and I also a realized that there is nothing for me in hardware engineering.

April 2014 - Present

My biggest standalone project. With its moderate audience and ever changing content it's ideal for experimenting with new technologies while making it better with every little change.

  • Heroku
  • Amazon S3
  • Amazon RDS
  • PHP
  • MySQL
  • Silex
  • Backbone
  • Webpack
  • JavaScript
  • HTML
  • CSS

It started with an idea to write a simple automated web crawler, that finds Hungarian movie premiere dates and generates a calendar link. Once the robot was working, it was just a step further to get some poster images, plot summary and genres.

Today it's a standalone web application with a couple hundred visitors every day. I'm in contact with almost every local distributor, who provide me press materials, and I do weekly social media updates on the actual releases.

September 2016 - Present

My active blog, where I publish posts about development, games and all kinds of things.

  • Ghost
  • Heroku
  • Amazon S3
  • Amazon RDS
  • NodeJS
  • MySQL
  • JavaScript
  • HTML
  • CSS

I wrote my first blog post around 2003. Since then I've had many blogs, I kept searching for the perfect medium to share my thoughts. Building the blog was always more interesting, than writing posts.

This one is my latest attempt. It's based on Ghost, a lightweight open-source blog engine written in NodeJS. Check out my writings...
